My Weekend: Mistrezz C
Christy Chan, better known as Mistrezz C behind the decks, is one of the few DJs in the scene that’s not doing the usual schtick. Yes, she is female, and while it’s refreshing to see girls kick ass on the decks, that’s not what’s important. What is important is the dynamic style and energy she brings to her sets and resident nights across town. Mistrezz C packs a wide array of songs in her arsenal, ranging from house and breakbeat to rap and Top 40. We talk with Mistrezz C to find out what gets her weekends jumping and where you might find her spinning next.
Thursday
I actually go out about 8ish with my friends for happy hour. I usually go to Cali Cali (1/F, 2A Hart Ave, Tsim Sha Tsui) near Why Club for their happy hour. After that, we head to Tsim Sha Tsui East for a place that I always love to go to − Open Oyster (G/F, 75 Mody Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui). It’s my chilling place and they have some good wine as well. Actually, I go there quite often. I start drinking wine until I start my set at Why Club (Basement, 8 Minden Ave, Tsim Sha Tsui). It depends − if my other DJ friends are around Tsim Sha Tsui, I might check out their parties. Sometimes I go to Why Club at 10pm even if I don’t have to DJ till 3am. I enjoy sharing music with my other DJ friends and listening to their sets. Because it’s always good to listen to other DJs so you know what’s going on apart from your sets.
Friday
I usually go for dinner in Soho at 8pm at Alfredo (G/F, 36 Elgin St, Soho). Friday, I stay at Hyde (2-3/F, 1 Lyndhurst Tce, Central) normally. I start DJing from 10pm till close – 4am. It’s a very long DJ set and a bit different from Why Club − old-school hip-hop and R&B. After work, usually, I check out if my friends have any gigs. I usually go to Volar (38-44 D’Aguilar St, Central) most of the time, and sometimes Insomnia (LG/F, 38-44 D’Aguilar St, Central) if I want to relax and drink.
Saturday
Saturday, I go out a bit earlier for shopping. After that I take the ferry so I can go slowly and relax. I don’t like the MTR. It’s too crowded. So I take the ferry to Central and meet up with friends for dinner and drinks at Lily & Bloom (5-6/F, 33 Wyndham St, Central). Sometimes I’ll check out Bisous (9/F, 33 Wyndham St, Central), and afterward Fly (G/F, 24-30 Ice House St, Central). It depends on where I DJ since I DJ every Saturday. Sometimes it’s Why Club, sometimes Armani/Privé (2/F, Chater House, 8 Connaught Rd, Central). I start at 11pm and finish around 3am. After then, I always go to see DJ Frankie Lam and DJ Ball wherever they have their gigs.
