Kim Fai
While most teens spend their money frivolously, house DJ Kim Fai remembers spending his adolescent cash flow stocking up on vinyl. “A lot of people seem to think that I came from the new CD generation, but I actually started back in 1998 with vinyl, spending thousands of pounds on it and practising in my mum’s attic,” Fai says with laughter as he recalls the days when he started out.
Like many in the profession, Fai knew from a young age he wanted music to be a huge part of his life after spending his Friday nights listening to Judge Jules and Pete Tong’s shows on BBC Radio 1, where he felt his calling to music came from.
“I started getting into Djing at the age of 15. I bought a pair of turntables and locked myself in a room for months until I got it down,” says Fai.
The years of practice have paid off, and nowadays his tracks are being aired on the very same station he used to follow. Kim Fai’s music has become known for combining the sounds of minimal techno with the funk-injected
kick that house tracks possess. Fai’s take on Inner City’s Good Life and his own tracks Zen and P.S. (all of which were part of his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix) are just a few tunes that show what Fai is capable of.
So what can we expect from Kim Fai’s upcoming DJ set at Likuid? “Lots of new tracks! Plenty of exclusives from myself – I’m going to be keeping people on their toes all night.”
