My weekend: DJ Kulu
Longtime purveyor of Norman Jay-influenced soul, funk, acid jazz and old school hip-hop, DJ Kulu has been an instantly recognisable staple of Hong Kong’s nightlife scene for many years. In between DJing with the live remix collective Ultralounge and with DJ Ivan as the duo Funkdamentalism, the former Edinburgh bar owner and Gandalf lookalike sits down with Time Out to offer his unique take on a weekend in
the city.
Friday
I usually go for breakfast about 4pm at BB Café (Tai Luk Keng Village 2). I’m weird like that. I play at Alfie’s (M18-19, MF, Prince’s Bldg, Central) from 7.30pm. It’s mainly after-work punters warming up before KEE or dragon-i so it’s quite chilled out. I mainly play jazz and soulful house. I finish around midnight – that’s time to party so it’s lucky I play in the early evening. Normally I stop by for a quickie at Mandarin’s MO Bar (15 Queen’s Rd Central, Central), shake hands with the DJ and say hello to some of the punters, and then carry on to KEE Club (6/F, 32 Wellington St, Central) where DJ Ivan is doing his set. Afterwards I head down to the Dirty Old Man’s Club (DOMC) [Kulu did not disclose the real name, location or nature of the ‘club’] where I’m on duty until 5am, then I’ll go on to Homebase (Basement, Au’s Bldg, 17-19 Hollywood Rd, Central).
Saturday
I normally have early breakfast at 4pm at Classified (G/F, 108 Hollywood Rd, Central) and afterwards I go for dinner at a café al fresco in Tai Hang called Café On The Corner (4 King St, Tai Hang). I work at KEE Club from 11pm until 4am. KEE is a bit more energetic than Alfie’s so I play more funky and jazzy house. At the moment I’m really into stuff like Dennis Ferrer. Then I go to do my late duty at the DOMC. Maybe afterwards I’d go to Yumla (Lower Basement, 79 Wyndham St) to meet a drunk
DJ Ivan.
Sunday
Normally I get up pretty late, as usual, and take a drive to BB Café again for breakfast. On Sundays all the performance/super car owners go for a morning drive and end up there. It’s become kind of a posh breakfast place, but it’s a shack! It’s a local dump for noodles and cha chaan teng-style food. All the Lamborghini, Ferrari and Harley-Davidson drivers are there. I love that little place. It’s right by an estuary where all the herons stop – it’s naturally beautiful. For dinner I go to Tsim Sha Tsui to a nice café called Initial (48 Cameron Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui) which serves really good continental food to round off the weekend.
