My weekend: Iain Brand
After moving to Hong Kong in 2008 and noticing a void of quality rock ‘n’ roll nights, Iain Brand brought his British sensibilities to the city. Partnering with the like-minded Paul Ogden (known on the scene as Oggie) under the Supersonic name, you can find these likely lads spinning everything from classic 60s rock to modern hits at Insenses and 80s favourites at Dharma Den. They’ve recently launched a Thursday night Supersonic event at Fly, so we caught up with Brand to find out how he spends the rest of his weekend.
Thursday
Dinnerwise on a midweek day, we’ll probably go to The Globe (45-53 Graham St, Central) for their pie and mash and mushy peas. Then we’d be heading down to Fly (G/F, 24-30 Ice House St, Central) for Supersonic. It’s free entry and good rock n’ roll tunes. Oggie and I split the time on the decks, so we do an hour on and then an hour off. Oggie’s not much of a dancer but I like to have a dance, thrash the air guitar, jump around a bit. Oggie is much more chilled; he’ll chat to people and what not. It gets a bit messy, for me more so than for Oggie. He’s more the sensible one, I’d say.
Friday
It starts with early drinks at Soho Corner Bar (43 Staunton St, Soho) straight from work. We all call it the “shack bar” because basically it looks like a shack. Afterwards we’ll head down to Kila (79 Wyndham St, Central) and just stand on the street and catch up with people. If there’s football on we’ll definitely watch it too – Newcastle [Brand’s team], which is painful to watch every week because we’re shit. From there, we might head down to Yumla (79 Wyndham St, Central). I’ll be inside dancing, shouting at the DJ, punching the air and whooping and generally embarrassing myself. If we’re feeling really messy, then we’ll go on to Homebase (17 Hollywood Rd, Central), but that doesn’t happen very often anymore as my girlfriend would have something to say about it. But if I was not to worry about my girlfriend, we’d probably carry on here!
Saturday
This would be a junk day, ideally. That’s my favourite pastime and one of my favourite things about Hong Kong. When we come back into Central, we’d go home for a kip and a shower, get changed and come back out. 208 Duecento Otto (208 Hollywood Rd, Sheung Wan) is my new favourite place. We’ll get a hot and spicy pizza for dinner. Then we might go to Solas (G/F, The Centrium, 60 Wyndham St, Central) or somewhere else on Wyndham Street. After that we might head to Volar (38-44 D’Aguilar St, Central) depending on who’s on. But if there’s a good band playing, we’d go see them. Hong Kong’s getting better and better for that as there are more live bands coming through now. If we go out on a band night, then after we’d go onto somewhere like Sense 99 (2/F-3/F, 99 Wellington St, Central). I love the more battered-up places. Hong Kong’s so polished; I think it’s good to have a bit of dirtiness every now and again.
Sunday
We’ll take the dog down to Stanley – he’s a British bulldog called Coby. He’s lush. We’ll take him along the main street and probably sit in Smugglers Inn (90A Stanley Main St, Stanley) and have a drink and some fish n’ chips. Generally, we’ll just have a lazy afternoon, get a couple pints of Guinness, then go home and KO.
