DJ Box 07 | Mike Mystery & Jane Blondel

Posted:

Two years ago Mike and Jane moved from their native Scotland to Hong Kong. Disappointed with the lack of indie parties running here they launched Songs For Children, an unpretentious night of dancing, sing-a-longs and unapologetic fun. Armed with their tambourines and signature ‘No Coldplay Guarantee’, Mike Mystery and Jane Blondel have since become a staple in the city’s burgeoning indie music scene. We caught up with this husband-and-wife DJ couple ahead of their gig hosting Asobi Seksu to find out why Jane doesn’t dig Mike’s ukulele. Andrea Yu

What do you dislike most in each other?
J: Snoring and ukulele playing.
M: What does she deplore most in me? That I’m fat! She hates that I’m fat and she hates my ukulele playing.
J: I don’t hate it, but just in the morning. Mike’s just really loud and noisy all the time.

Favourite swear word?
J: Fuck. Fuckity-fuck.
M: Fucknuts. Or arse-candle. We swear a lot at each other or at general members of the public.
J: It’s being Scottish, we blame it on that.

When did you last cry?
M: I can’t remember Jane crying, she tends to be more dispassionate. I usually cry at Disney movies or when I’m listening to the theme tune of the Gummy Bears when I’m drunk. I’m quite emotional.

When are you happiest?
J: Mike’s happiest when he’s eating a pie.

Most embarrassing moment?
M: When we were back home during the summer, I asked Bob Stanley from Saint Etienne’s girlfriend when her baby was due. And she wasn’t pregnant.
J: Then he tried to cover it by saying “what do you do?”And she was like “I heard you the first time.”

The worst thing anyone’s said to you?
M: At a Songs For Children gig once, someone said: “I can’t hear the music over the tambourine.”

Track to get kids dancing?
M: If in doubt, just play The Smiths.

What is your greatest fear?
M: Clowns.
J: Coldplay.

What are your guilty pleasures?
M: Jane is absolutely obsessed with cheese.

Tell us a secret. We won’t tell.
J: Mike likes DND. Dungeons and Dragons. It’s really not cool at all.
M: I’m a total geek. We share many interests but sadly not the ukulele or role play.

Songs for Children host Asobi Seksu at Hangout on Tuesday 23.
