AN21
Not a week goes by without Antoine Josefsson being questioned about the relationship with his older brother. Annoying, but understandable, given that his older brother happens to be DJ, producer and Swedish House Mafia member Steve Angello.
But under the name AN21 (An-to-ine, get it?) Josefsson has emerged into the house music industry in his own right, first commanding the Swedish scene in the country’s top clubs and then making a name for himself through remixes of major artists – such as Basement Jaxx’s Raindrops. But having grown up with Angello, it was natural for these brothers to bond both at home and in the studio. “We sync very well together after discussing music for years of what’s good and what is not. We know what we want to do the minute we step into the lab,” says Josefsson.
But lately it’s been difficult for the Swede to find time to work in the studio, with a busy tour schedule taking him across an impressive four continents in one month. “I started producing in my ‘laptop bedroom’ so I’ve always been able to cook up a lot of tracks while I’m on the road,” he says. Out of his travelling studio, AN21 is renowned for his ability to surprise audiences with his shape-shifting style, switching from tech-house to techno, and from deep house to everything in between. This leaves the crowd continually guessing what’s next, and wanting more from this young DJ.
How young, you ask? “I turned 21 a couple of days ago,” confesses Joseffson, as he tells us about the challenges he faced early on in his career. “It was very hard since people didn’t take me seriously.” But we expect Joseffson’s critics have been left in the past as he makes his way to Hong Kong. “I have never been to Asia so I’m really looking forward to it.” And given that his self-described sound is “energy, emotions and lots of sex!”, so are we.
