So why did you start the night?
[DJ partner Paul Ogden and I] both love rock‘n’roll music and got tired of not hearing it anywhere so thought we’d do it ourselves.
Did you previously run club nights in the UK?
We’ve run various nights in the North of England like Resurrekt and Mischief in Leeds, Fishfry in Manchester and a few smaller one-off events in Newcastle.
What kind of music do you play?
We play British rock‘n’roll from the 60s till now. We play loads of stuff from the 90s [Britpop] heyday like Pulp, Blur, Oasis and Elastica, then more recent stuff like Arctic Monkeys, Fratellis and Kasabian chucked in with the Kinks, The Stones, The Beatles… We’re pretty flexible.
What does Britpop mean to you?
Britpop was a great era for me really… 1996 was an amazing summer: Blur vs Oasis battling in the charts, England getting to the semi finals of Euro 96. There were a lot of new bands that emerged at that time that never ran the distance but were great while they lasted…The Boo Radleys, Echobelley, Menswear…. good times!
What bands are rocking your world at the moment?
I’ll always be a massive Oasis fan, they’re the soundtrack to my youth! But the new Arctic Monkeys album is a total belter as well.
What do you think of the Hong Kong club scene?
I think it’s all a bit sterile. It seems to be the same music played everywhere. I miss British style clubs where everyone lets go of their inhibitions and goes mental and has a good time. That’s what we’re trying to recreate.
What kind of crowd goes to Supersonic?
We get a real mixed bag, lots of expats obviously but also locals who appreciate good music. I think we have a very unpretentious crowd who just want to have a good time and have a proper dance – which is exactly the crowd we want.
Supersonic is at Bassment on Saturday 7.
