DJ Yuksek

Posted:

Of all the Gallic disc-jockeying wizardry (from Stereoheroes, the Penelopes and Leonard de Leonard, among others) we’ve seen in the city recently, few are likely to woo like blue-eyed beau gosse Yuksek. One click on the YouTube link for April-dropped single Extraball (featuring Spank Rock’s oh-so-cool Amanda Blank), and you’ll be smitten with the sound, the film, the voices, the clothes, and the understated sexiness of it all.

The single is the highlight of his danceable debut album Away from the Sea (released in January) and was influenced, according to the Reims-born DJ, by Queen and Electric Light Orchestra. But the familiar electro riffs lend the happy blend of hip-hop, filtered bass and vocal harmonies with a Daft Punkian bounce. On the whole a departure from his roots in pop and French house, the album is nonetheless full of nods towards his musical beginnings.

Yuksek (Pierre-Alexandre Busson to his friends) left school at 17 to launch a career in music, and finally stepped into the spotlight  as part of the evolving ‘French Touch’ scene. A gifted producer, he has remixed for artists like Mika, the Kaiser Chiefs, and Ghostface Killah (Wu Tang Clan). At 32, the DJ is older than many of electro’s young groundbreakers, but his age is not something that troubles him. “We’re in this festive, nocturnal environment – you don’t really notice the years passing,” he explained in a March interview with French magazine Only for DJs, “I needed this time to arrive at the sound I wanted to have, to grow from all the music I’ve been able to listen to until now, and to absorb my influences.”

The DJ, whose stage name is Turkish slang for “high” (euphoric, not stoned), seems to be a favourite for this summer’s dance music festival season. This fortnight, he stops in Hong Kong on his way to play Summersonic in Tokyo and Osaka. In July, he played Cannes’ Plages Electroniques, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Spain’s Benicassim, Dublin's Oxegen, and Berlin’s Melt! Festival. And he’s far from finished.

Following his first appearances in the US and Japan this year, the Frenchman admits he still has a lot to play and a long way to go. But, says Yuksek, “I tend to let things happen, it’s not my philosophy to force things. It all happens sooner or later.” Samantha Leese.

Yuksek’s latest single, So Far Away from the Sea, is now available on iTunes.
