Not-so-fatal attraction
Michael Losier speaks to Matt Fleming about his self-help concept, Oprah Winfrey sessions and forthcoming trip to Hong Kong
When an author self-publishes a self-help book, expect to find it hidden at the back of the bookshop among the forgotten reference tomes and the primary school-standard debut novels. That’s where Canadian Michael Losier’s tome, Law of Attraction: The Science of Getting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don’t could have wound up. But it didn’t. Due to word-of-mouth, since its release in 2003, it’s sold more than a million copies across the globe, been translated into 28 languages and has stood atop many a bestseller list. That’s not bad. Not bad at all.
The ‘law of attraction’ is basically a ‘force’ that attracts people, jobs, situations and relationships – not all of them positive – and can help in business and in life in general. It’s self-help at its most basic – but the army of followers speaks for itself. Losier started teaching the concept in 1998 from his home and it grew from there. But now he’s on his way to Hong Kong for a full-day seminar on ‘transforming your personal and professional life’ and a book signing in Dymocks. The 50-year-old tells us ahead of time about his next offering which hits the bookshelves later in the year.
Law of Attraction put you on the literary map. Why was it such a success and what are ‘vibes’?
The timing was perfect. More and more people are seeking some answers to why their lives are the way they are. They are ‘seekers’. There is a movement towards success training and self-help training. And vibes are moods or feelings. We get a ‘good vibe’ from someone or pick up their ‘negative’ vibe. It’s a mood or a feeling, or, in fact, a vibration.
Oprah Winfrey interviewed you after the book was published. Did you expect to receive this sort of A-grade attention?
I was interviewed by Oprah four times on her radio show Soul Series with Oprah. After those four interviews I was asked to host my own show on the Oprah & Friends Talk Radio Channel. I used Law of Attraction to help attract some ideal resources so I could get more exposure
to the message.
You have a new book on its way – Fulfilment Needs. What is it about?
People are often saying that they are not fulfilled at home, at work or in their relationships. They say they are bored. These are signs that they are not getting fulfilled. The book helps people uncover what fulfills them. Once they know, they can use their ‘fulfillment needs’ list to help them make decisions on what to do.
Do you expect the same sort of success from this offering?
Yes. I have been delivering seminars and conference calls on this material and getting awesome results. I am still working on the book this summer and will continue to develop the processes.
Why should Hongkongers come to your seminar here?
It’s a Law of Attraction seminar. I’m the how-to guy for helping people to apply this ‘law of attraction’. I give those people the tools and the processes to help them stop attracting what they don’t want and start attracting what they do. My book is in 28 languages and copies of Law of Attraction are selling every eight to 10 minutes.
After Fulfillment, what does the future hold for you?
Being fulfilled. My fulfillment needs are: attention, influencing people in a positive way, contribution and, of course, freedom.
Fulfillment Needs is available later this year. For details, check out fulfillmentneeds.com. Losier’s book signing is at Dymocks IFC on Friday June 29 between 1pm and 2pm, and his seminar is on June 30, between 10am and 6pm, at the Empire Hotel HK in Hennessy Rd, Wan Chai.
