Passport HK: Ireland
St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17, so for the Irish and the wannabe Irish, we’re celebrating in honour of their patron saint.
If you’re looking for something different from the usual Irish bars, Fruit-i-licious, the monthly gay-and-straight-friendly night at Rockschool (2/F, 21-25 Luard Rd, Wan Chai, 2510 7339) promises a ‘tato-tastic’ homage to all things Irish and camp on March 17, complete with Irish themed-burlesque, Irish dancing and a drag band contest in honour of pop guru Louis Walsh. If you fancy your Paddy’s Day with a drink outside of the usual Wan Chai or Central haunts, there’s O’Connell’s bar in Tai Po (Shop 4, G/F, 27 Kwong Fuk Rd, 2650 9118) or McLovin’s Tavern (Shop G6, G/F, 66 Mody Rd, 2722 8202) in East Tsim Sha Tsui, where you can sit outside, gaze across the harbour and pretend it’s the Liffey. Meanwhile, if you’re scared to leave Central, Solas (G/F, 60 Wyndham St, Central, 3162 3710) is offering two-for-one Guinness beer until 10pm on the special day.
The Irish Chamber of Commerce are hosting a talk with former rugby pundit and sports journalist George Hook on March 25 as a lead-up to the Sevens (book at www.irishchamber.hk). For more sport, the Gaelic Athletic Association (www.gaa.hk) is open to both men and women who either want to watch or play Ireland’s national sport, Gaelic football. And for something artistic, the Echoes of Erin School of Irish Dance (www.echoesirishdance.com, 9093 2015) offers classes for all ages and levels in Wan Chai and Sai Kung, as well as giving students the opportunity to perform publicly. Finally, the St. Patrick’s Society (www.stpatrickshk.com) runs events throughout the year and is a good place to find all things Celtic.
