Thursday Night Fight

DEF Boxing - Hong Kong's premier boxing gym - hosted its second Thursday Night Fight on April 26 at KITEC in Kowloon Bay. And we were there to catch the action. Endorsed and officially supported by the Universal Boxing Organisation, several fighters were making their debuts - either in a professional or in a championship bout.

On a VIP-laced, star-studded night, with celebrities such as British boxing legend Ricky Hatton and movie star Daniel Wu in attendance, TNFII featured three undercard matches and four title fights. Local hero and DEF boxer Rex Tso knocked out Thailand's Torsak Singbasak to win his first UBO Asia Pacific Superflyweight title and, in the process, remained undefeated.

As most fights ended in a knockout, the audience got its money's worth, although there were complaints about the standard of the match-ups in some of the title fights, being that there were so many early knockouts. But the undercard fights were much more even with both boxers exchanging several blows before a winner was decided - often late into the match.

The final event of the night, the light-heavyweight title fight between Republic of Congo's Bresson Lefombou and Thailand's Plaisakda Singwancha, lasted for only one minute and 20 seconds in Round One as Lefombou pummelled Singwancha within the opening minute with a series of uppercuts, hooks and clever jabs, landing him on the ground three times before the referee stopped the fight.

Despite all that, though, the event was a stunning visual spectacle for the packed house of 500-plus boxing fans, who were treated to a four-course meal and the sight of the gorgeous ring girls. Also on offer was a lucky draw with two prizes, including an NOA G002 men's watch, valued at $16,300, and a voucher for several personal training sessions at DEF Boxing. What a knockout!
