Time Out's Big Night Out

Grappa's Cellar April 24

When you cram ten of the best bands that Hong Kong has to offer into a single billing, you expect a pretty big night (hence, Big Night Out). But we didn't necessarily expect it to turn out quite so epic. We hate blowing our own trumpet here at Time Out (even an electronic trumpet a la Snoblind), but there's a little bit of us that thinks that this was one of the best showcases of local music we've seen in a while. (Of course, we might be biased...)

Good Fellas serenaded before stoking the rocking fires. The Yours trashed the stage, not once but twice. The Sinister Left turned it up with some driving rock tunes. Volt in Music electronified the night (and their glasses) with their crafted audio-visual act. Snoblind pushed the BPM up a notch, together with electronic wind and string instruments, and then S.T. brought his insane sampling, beats, gadgets and violin. A Roller Control's retro beats, krautified lyrics and cultured electro rock got the crowd dancing. DP premiered their new video (which was awesome) before bringing a White Stripes flair to the night. As usual, Chochukmo were Something Special, and Poubelle International, with special guest Hamish McKenzie, ended the night, inducing crowd surfing with their feel good upbeat tunes.

Thanks to everyone who turned out on Saturday night – not just to our gig, but to the others going on about town. It was great to see so many people out supporting the live music scene across the city.

And a big up to Metal Postcard Soundsystem for the super tunes throughout the night.
