Discovery Bay Farmers’ Market
Hong Kong is usually seen as being obsessed with labels and consumption. But, if you’re at all familiar with Discovery Bay’s Handmade Hong Kong craft market, you’ll know it’s committed to bringing a neighbourly, down-to-earth approach to shopping in the SAR. It’s a fresh, natural take on the worn, consumerist stereotype.
The new farmers’ market in DB’s North Plaza promises to stick to the ‘local’ ethos. “A lot of people in Hong Kong say ‘I wish we could eat more fresh and local food. Hong Kong would be great if we had a local market’,” says co-founder Jacinta Read. She and her partners had the idea of starting up a farmers’ market about a year ago, when they noticed an increasing demand for local and organic food. “It’s a growing global trend, really,” Read says. “People have a growing social and environmental conscience, no matter where you’re living. The problem in Hong Kong is that we have to import most of it – and so the prices go up.”
Because Hong Kong has so little farmland, most of the food has to be brought in. That’s the way of things here. However the DB Farmers’ Market aims to make the best of the situation by tracing the food’s origins for sustainability. The market will consist of 30 tables, selling everything from organic produce grown in Lantau, to locally-made yoghurt, cupcakes and baked goods, handmade soap and environmentally-friendly cleaning products.
One vendor, Not Only Olives, is a recurring star of the Handmade Hong Kong market and will be back for the farmers’ market. True to the name, it sells olives alongside pickles and chutneys. The founders are also excited to be including the YMCA’s local produce, lovingly grown at their organic farm in Tung Chung.
The DB Farmers’ Market hopes that it will become an indispensable resource, especially for expats who are looking for food that’s cheaper than the international supermarket chains and is more easily navigable than wet markets. Mark your calendars – the market will run on the first Sunday of February, April, October and December as a reliable place to pick up fresh and tasty local produce.
