World of WearableArt
For more than 20 years, creative designers and artists have been making extravagant, larger-than-life creations in the hope of showing their masterpieces on stage at New Zealand’s annual World of WearableArt (WOW) show. It’s not quite a couture fashion show and not quite an art exhibition, but more of a stage performance that combines elements of music, choreography, art and dance. The WOW show comes to Hong Kong this fortnight as a highlight programme of the HK Arts Festival, with no narration or translations required. We’ve picked out some of our favourite kooky creations and wondered what it might be like to wear them in real life...
Punk Bird Family
Hongkongers have long been fans of matching outfits, so we think this trio of costumes will be a hit. There’s a different look for mama, papa and baby bird each, but with our recent avian flu scares, this feathered fashion statement might not take off as expected.

Perfect Pins
If you’re in need of a needle and thread, look no further than this oversized pin cushion, topped with a silver thimble to boot. You’ll need a svelte pair of legs to pull off this piece, but luckily the top-heavy puff will make most anyone’s pins look… well, perfect!

You Don’t Bring Me Flowers
He loves me, he loves me not. If your significant other hasn’t been showering you with pretty petals like he used to, find comfort in this larger-than-life bouquet where you can stop and smell the roses all day, every day.
Created by Catherine Anderton, New Zealand.
Dragon Fish
With the Lunar New Year approaching, it’s only fitting that we include a dragon-inspired costume on our list. Although the hybrid Dragon Fish creature probably hasn’t appeared in Chinese folklore before, wearing this piece might just give you double the prosperity for the price of one outfit.
Created by Susan Holmes, New Zealand.
