Macau Grand Prix
The smell of burning rubber is only a ferry-ride away this fortnight. The 58th Macau Grand Prix draws a slew of big names in racing this year, like Robert Huff and Gabriele Tarquini, among more than 200 competitors in Formula 3 and motorcycle racing. The Guia Race will be the highlight – a 6.2km route popular among most drivers in the field for its long straights and twisting corners. Its layout is still true to the first run in 1972 and is considered as one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar. As the final round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, it’s bound to be an exciting race as an exceptional performance here could elevate a driver to the pinnacle of racing – the Formula 1. Nab a ticket near the Lisboa Bend as it’s notorious for having massive shunts during the opening lap, thanks to a right-angle turn and narrow track width.
Unlike most circuits, the Macau Grand Prix also plays host to endurance racing motorcycle drivers. Michael Rutter has been a six-time champion for this race and was runner-up last year, so we’ll see if he can rise up to reclaim the top spot.
Since only six percent of Hongkongers own private cars, the Macau Grand Prix will be one of the few opportunities to indulge in your petrolhead fantasies. Andrea Yu
