CityDash
Downing a bowl of curry, performing a lion dance and undertaking a 7m rock climb were just some of the tasks that CityDashers faced last year. DSF CityDash is Hong Kong’s version of the reality TV show The Amazing Race, where teams of two complete set tasks that combine tech savviness with local culture. “CityDash is a city adventure race which takes a lot of brain, a bit of brawn and a ton of fun,” says Edmon Chung of Digital Solidarity Fund (DSF), the organising group behind CityDash. This year, more than 300 teams are anticipated to attend and raise funds for the DSF’s beneficiaries like the Null Distance project that trains the mentally disabled to use information and communication technologies (ICT).
While Chung can’t reveal the tasks for this year’s Dash, he can tell us there will be more than 20 checkpoints.“If [teams] can make good use of ICT like smartphones, tablets, internet or GPRS, along with a support team back home, that will give them an advantage,” he says. Here are some of Edmon Chung’s favourite checkpoints from last year’s CityDash:
Lipstick Opera Heritage Museum
One team member uses a digital face-painting programme to create a Chinese opera make-up design while the other member paints it on their face. Don’t expect Da Vinci.
Mouthful of Hindi Culture Knutsford Terrace
One team member chows down on a bowl of curry while the other translates a Chinese or English phrase into Hindi, then recites it to event staff. Hilarity ensues.
Fancy a Dance? Ngong Ping 360
Teams learn some simple lion dance moves and perform them to surrounding crowds to test participants’ memory, dance skills and flat-out courage. Gulp.
Start/finish at Kowloon Park Piazza Sunday 13 .10am-4pm dsf.citydash.hk
