Party in the park

A giant Cheshire cat, kid-made windsocks and interpretive dance take over Victoria Park’s central lawn this fortnight. Last year’s Arts in the Park Mardi Gras saw more than 65,000 carnival-goers revel in free, family-friendly activities such as balloon twisting, drum jamming and DIY craftwork. This year marks the event’s 10th anniversary and will revolve around the theme of Alice in Wonderland, so join us as we peer through our looking glass at the highlights…

Let’s get physical!
The Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation has trained up five dance groups, each choreographed to represent a scene from Alice in Wonderland. For example, youth groups will interpret a game of chess and fight between pawns while another group re-enacts the Mad Hatter’s tea party, each with costumes to match. The young performers will also take part in the grand finale parade, in case you miss their stage shows.

Puppet processions
Groups of secondary school students have worked with professional artists to create giant human-operated puppets which stand eight to 12 feet tall. Continuing with the Alice in Wonderland theme, the White Rabbit, Caterpillar, Cheshire Cat and Alice herself will be exhibited on the central lawn before the event’s grand finale – a parade around Victoria Park. The puppets, along with their operators and other performers, will set off on Sunday at 3.30pm and loop twice around the park. You can also admire the giant puppets when they’re displayed on the lawn on the Saturday and Sunday before the parade.

A heart for art
If your kids are often found painting ‘Monet masterpieces’ on the white walls of your home, then help them channel all that artistic energy into something a little less permanent at the 16 art stalls. Here, you and your children can make windsocks, decorations and costumes out of coloured paper while face painters transform them into lions and dinosaurs. Magicians will also be on hand to give demonstrations on juggling and balloon animals.
And the best part? It’s all for free!

Victoria Park Saturday 12 - Sunday 13. 10am-5pm. FREE
