Formula 1 Fever
The crowded streets of Hong Kong are far from an ideal location for developing a race circuit, which has left our local motor fanatics escaping to Macau to cure their Formula fever. But this fortnight, Red Bull is pulling together a revhead’s dream, with a series of high-octane events in the heart of Central, from superbike tricks to wheel-spinning donuts – and the small matter of an F1 showrun. The event hype has already begun, with a mobile showroom making the rounds and the star car on its way to the city to make appearances in some unexpected places.
The main event
Red Bull Racing’s Formula 1 car is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the event. Jaime Alguersuari, the youngest F1 driver ever and one half of Scuderia Toro Rosso (that’s “Red Bull Team” in Italian), will pilot the RB1 down a 600-metre closed-off stretch of Lung Wo Road in Central. The RB1 has reached speeds of over 250 km/h in previous show runs, and can top 300 km/h in a real F1 race. While the Formula 1 car alone would be enough to draw crowds, Superbikes, Lotuses and an Arista will also be revving their engines, Fast and the Furious style.
The extras
Six Lotuses, led by Eric Wong and his Richburg team, will be performing a car formation road sweep. Steven Lee’s Superbike stunt team will be perform one-wheelers, spins and tire burnouts, defying multiple laws of gravity along the way. James Tang and the TypeRClub, will perform a drift show with a Nissan Z33 Fairlady and a Toyota Arista, generating plenty of smoke in the process. And finally, Alguersuari will ride in an Infiniti G Sedan parade car, for your swooning and photo-snapping pleasure to end off the show.
The F1 car
After being used for Red Bull Racing’s first season in 2006, the RB1 now travels the world to perform show runs. It’s been everywhere from Germany and Australia to India and Japan racing on surfaces as varied as beaches to ice. Here are the specs for the sleek speed-machine.

Spectator tips
Arrive early
All of the action takes place along Lung Wo Road in Central. The course spans a spacious 600 metres, viewable from either side of the road, but with organisers anticipating 40,000 attendants, you’ll likely be jostling for any spot. Our tip? Just get there early.
Get in the middle
The centre of the street will be the best place to catch the excitement, as this is where Jaime will be spinning donuts in the RB1. Expect plenty of smoke.
Bring ear plugs
Anyone who’s been to an F1 race knows the sound of screaming horsepower. The HK show includes plenty of sprints, donuts and tire burnouts, so there will be masses of noise generated at this event, especially harsh for little ears.
Around town
Think you can match the pace of an F1 driver? From Tuesday June 7, a mobile showroom featuring two racing simulators will make stops around the city. You can test out the simulator, with prizes up for grabs for those who snag the top lap times.
Spot the car!
If you’re more of a seer than a doer, the RB1 will be finding its way into unexpected spots around the city this month. Staring from June 15, organisers will stealthily place the car in public areas across Hong Kong, hoping to take passersby by surprise. Most locations are under lock and key, but we can reveal one: the 7-Eleven on Great George Street, Causeway Bay, on Friday June 17.
