Sport For All Day

Posted:

Obesity isn’t as much of a problem in Hong Kong as it is in other Western countries, but that doesn’t mean we’re any healthier. According to a recent study, almost half of all Hongkongers fail to achieve the weekly exercise requirement of 30 minutes a day, three days a week for a healthy lifestyle. To encourage more people to partake in physical activities, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has designated August 8 as Sport For All Day in Hong Kong.

For one day only, fee-charging leisure facilities throughout the city will be opened for free use by the public. According to LSCD spokesman Chris Choy, “Sport For All Day will be a golden opportunity for the public to have a taste of the wide diversity of sports and recreation services that are readily available for their enjoyment.“ Facilities available include badminton, tennis, basketball, squash and volleyball courts as well as swimming pools, climbing walls and much more.

Besides free access to their facilities, several sport centres in the 18 districts will host a series of free programmes and talks. Former Chinese gold medalists such as gymnast Li Xiaopeng have been invited to share their sporting experience while local athletes will be on hand to play sports with participants.

Choy estimates around 100,000 people will take advantage of the free offer. Registration is already open, and is on a first-come-first-served basis. Just think, a half-hour less of Youtube-watching or Facebook-stalking will set you on a path to better health.
