Hong Kong's best hikes

Posted:

Looking for a hike this weekend? Here are a few of our favourites. By Andrew James.

Check out our handy map to find these spots.

Cheung Sha Beach Beach walking, Easy
A quiet beach with a decent windsurf, surf and kayak rental shop. For a long beach walk, head west and over the headland.

Lantau Trail Stage 1 & 2, Sunset Peak 9km, Difficult
A great hike up and through the hills of Lantau ending with a panoramic view of Tung Chung (and the lovely airport).

Lantau Trail Stage 9 & 8, Shek Pik Reservoir to Tai O 16km, Very Difficult
Not so many hills on this hike, but lots of bush to push through as the trail is very overgrown.

MacLehose Trail, Stage 3 Pak Tam Au to Kei Ling Ha  10.2km, Difficult
A hike that starts out with lots of steps but takes you through the forests of Sai Kung. Very cool on a misty day (see photo).

MacLehose Trail Stage 4 & 5 Kei Ling Ha to Tai Po Road, Stage 4 & 5 MacLehose Trail   23.3km, 8+ hrs, Very Difficult
A long hike that will take you from the outskirts of Sai Kung to downtown Sham Shui Po. Something to brag about.

MacLehose Trail, Stages 7 & 8 16km, Moderately Difficult
Another long hike for those that like the hills. Head up and over some of the New Territories' best and biggest.

Mui Wo to Discovery Bay 6km, 3hrs, Easy
Short, easy, and Ends in Discovery Bay. Need we say more?

Mui Wo to Lantau Peak 40km, Very Difficult
This covers the Moontrekker race on Lantau Island and the route taken on the 40km night hike. A great hike anytime that ends with a slog up Lantau Peak.

Pak Tam Au to Tai Long Wan (Sharp Peak extension) 13km approx., Difficult
A paved trail that leads off to the real thing, then beautiful beaches, clean water, and maybe a few sharks.

Pak Tam Chung to Long Ke 12km, 3 hrs, Easy
A short hike to another one of Sai Kung's great beaches. An easy hike to a great beach on a sunny day.

The Peak to Wong Nai Chung Gap Road, part of the Hong Kong Trail 25km, Very Difficult
This one is long. And difficult. Go for the views or break it down into segments and take it easy.

Sheung Luk stream 5km to the river, Moderate (Waterfall finish)
A hike to a waterfall. How much better can it get? Go after a relatively rainy period for the full-on falling water effect (think: May-June).

Tai Tam Gap to Stanley Gap 7km, 2 hrs, Moderate (Beer finish)
A rough one up and over some serious hills. But it's all downhill and finishes up nicely with a beer in Stanley.

Wilson Trail Stage 2 7km, 2hrs, Moderate
Just a nice getaway close to the city and ends by the MTR. Easy to get to and from with views over the North Point-Causeway Bay area.

Wong Nai Chung to Tai Tam 9km, 3 hours, Moderate
A tie up of a few different routes that will take you past the historic Tai Tam Reservoir.

Yau Tong to Ma Yau Tong Village 6-7km, 4 hours, Moderate
Devil's Peak: how can you not want to hike up it? With an derelict military outpost on top that you can rummage through, it makes for an interesting heritage hike.

  • Great information: I will try to run/hike the mentioned trails over the course of this year. I have a blog that details my experiences so far: http://joggerjoel.blogspot.com
