Cantonese Opera Fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Association
When a bunch of celebrities step onto the stage in unusual circumstances, they typically hog the spotlight. But in a special Cantonese Opera performance on Saturday 23, the real stars of the show will be 16 talented young performers with Down Syndrome.
The actor-singers are part of the Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association’s Cantonese Opera Troupe and they’ll perform excerpts from five great plays – including Princess Cheung Ping, The Purple Jade Hair Pin, and Farewell 18 Times – alongside the under secretary of Home Affairs, Florene Hui, the chairman of the Academy of Performing Arts, Leung Nai-kong, and the chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, John Cho-chak. Also showing off their stuff will be a slew of Cantonese Opera stars, including Ng Tsin-fung, Oong Koon-tin, Wan Fei-yin, Chan Wing-yee and Yam Bing-yee.
The performance takes place in North Point’s historic Sunbeam Theatre, which was spared from redevelopment by a government subsidy early last year. However, the property owner has signalled his intent to redevelop the theatre in three years’ time. On top of that, all proceeds from the evening go towards the arts development fund of the Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association. If that’s not reason enough to catch yourself a slice of the most Hong Kong of artistic pursuits, you’re beyond help.
