Hong Kong Salsa Festival

Posted: 19 Jan 2010

Mid-Winter gets a week-long dose of Latin spice as Asia-Pacific's largest Salsa Festival moves our hips to the music. The event, which includes street parties, club nights, workshops, and a regional open dancing competition, is now in its 9th year. Dance stars from around the world will be on hand not only to compete, but also to show us how to move like a master.

The event spins into action with a grand opening featuring Laurent Hounsavi. The Parisian songster will be crooning a mix of tunes as participants strut up a storm. After we're all warmed up, the party breaks out onto Avenue of Stars and everyone is invited to the city's hottest salsa street party that will have our harbour steaming.

Saturday will see some of the best in the world competing for a regional title in one of the biggest dance-offs in Asia. But for dancers in the dark, the entire weekend is also full of workshops aimed at beginners and pros. Taught by some of the best instructors and dance pros including the UK’s Super Mario, known as ‘The Million Moves Man’ and a very sought-after instructor in the salsa world. The lessons aren't limited to just one dance form and will include everything from bachata and mambo to ceroc styles. There will even be a class for those hoping to lose their two left feet and learn the fanciest of footwork (called "shines") from the masters. The time to polish up your dancing shoes is now.

Various venues, Monday 1-February 7, see website for details: www.hksalsafestival.com
