Get Out: Wong Nai Chung to Tai Tam
9km, 3 hours, Moderate
With the onset of prime hiking season, here’s a good trail with great views and mixed terrain that keeps it relatively easy going for a decent Sunday stroll. Head up beyond the reservoir on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road to the trailhead in the shadows of the Parkview towers then make for the woods along the country trail on the south side of the road. The route backtracks the Wilson Stage 1 trail over Violet Hill, and with the current clean crisp weather offers views toward Kowloon and down to Repulse Bay ahead. The Japanese used Violet Hill during the Battle of Hong Kong to bombard Aberdeen with field gun fire from above.
At the base of the daunting twin peaks, veer left along the intersecting trail and follow the Tai Tam Reservoir’s western catchwater as it snakes back along the side of Violet Hill before meeting up with the emerald waters of Tai Tam Reservoir. Cross the bridge and follow the Tai Tam Reservoir Road along the water’s edge before crossing the main dam, taking a left and joining Stage 1 of the Hong Kong Trail. Head up Mount Parker Road to where it crosses the Boa Vista segment of the Hong Kong Forest Track and follow the flat trail along the southern slopes of Mount Parker.
The trail eventually turns to a dirt forest track when it cuts into the the woods and heads up toward the mountains. There’s a small side-trail that descends to Tai Tam Road and a bus stop back to civilisation.
Getting there: Take either the 6 or 66 bus from Exchange Square in Central and alight at Wong Nai Chung Gap Road near Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park.
