Unison Hikathon 2009
The non-profit group Unison holds its first hikathon on Sunday 11 to raise money for its work with Hong Kong’s ethnic minorities. Pay $100 to join, choose either the 4km or 10km trail, and enjoy festive music and refreshments along the way. 2789 3246, info@unison.org.hk, unison.org.hk.

Hit the islands
Take a 90-minute ferry ride out to remote Tung Ping Chau to check out a beach and some coral life or wander through an abandoned village; get a bit of grass time on Tap Mun’s finest knob, with beautiful ocean views and the odd stray cow; or be bamboozled by Po Toi’s fascinating rock formations before filling up on seafood.

Ferries for Tung Ping Chau leave Ma Liu Shui (near University MTR station) on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Ferries for Po Toi leave Aberdeen on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Ferries for Tap Mun leave Wong Shek and Ma Liu Shui daily. More details: www.traway.com.hk.

Take surfing lessons
Check out XGame’s three-hour theory and practice sessions at Big Wave Bay and ride the waves until the winter weather finally forces you back inside. Wakeboarding, skateboarding, and skimboarding lessons also offered. $500 per person for groups of two to four. 2366 3017, www.xgamehk.com.

Swim in a waterfall
Hike from the Sai Kung’s High Island Reservoir over the trail past Sai Wan village and hit up the waterfall at Luk Wu Stream – it’s about a 4km trek from the start of the trail at Sai Kung Sai Wan Road, which is a five-minute taxi ride past Lady MacLehose Holiday Village. At the stream, you can climb up to the waterfall. There’s a great pool to swim in and high rocks to jump off.

Hike to Hong Kong's best beaches:

Long Ke
A bus trip to Sai Kung Village, a $100 cab ride, and a 20-minute walk over a hill lands you right at this stunning white-sand beach. Ask the taxi driver to drop you off at the end of the High Island Reservoir.

Tai Long Wan
Head to Sai Kung Village and take the 94R bus to Pak Tam Au. From there, walk over the paved part of the MacLehose Trail, Stage 2, for 90 minutes to reach this long and uncrowded beach. Surfboards and bodyboards available for hire.

Tai Kwai Wan
Find an isolated and empty stretch of sand on this Cheung Chau beach. On arrival, hang a left off the ferry, walk to the end of the road, go left on to Pai Chong Road and then right at Cheung Kwai Road. Walk until you hit the beach. The ‘hike’ will only set you back 20 minutes.

Lo So Shing
Give Lamma’s popular Hung Shing Yeh Beach (and its accompanying power-station views) a miss and carry on over the nearby walking trail for 30 minutes until you find Lo So Shing, nestled behind an eternally sleeping village. A quiet and shady place to take in the sun without the squealing kiddies.
