Get Out: The Peak to Wong Nai Chung Gap Road, part of the Hong Kong Trail
If you want Peak-like views of Hong Kong Island’s south side without having to wrestle with the crowds, head out along the Hong Kong trail. Be warned: unlike the trails in Kowloon and the New Territories, the Hong Kong Trail offers very little in the way of amenities, so be sure to bring your own food and water for the full distance.
The route – taking in stages one to four of the trail – starts at Lugard Road and continues until it peels off along Chatham Path at a small picnic area a few kilometers from the trailhead. A short distance down the path finds a good rest spot with great views of the easternmost edges of the Island. From here you’ll head back toward Pok Fu Lam Reservoir. The trail becomes more rugged as it descends the hillsides on the south end of the island.
Continue on through the forest and over-flowing streams back to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road offering views toward Aberdeen and the busy East Lamma Channel. The next stage continues along the hills behind Aberdeen to Peel Rise. Prepare for a stop to take your shoes off and enjoy the Foot Reflexology Path. Then work your way back up toward Wan Chai Gap Road by the Police Museum. The museum is worth a visit and also a good spot to jump off the trail early.
The final stage heads up to Black’s Link and comes out above the massive apartment complexes just off Wong Nai Chung Gap Road. If in need of food or drink, take a short walk up the steep Tai Tam Reservoir Road to the snack stall at Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park. If your legs think the 25km you’ve just covered weren’t enough, rent a paddleboat and tackle the open waters of the small reservoir.
Getting there: Take one of the many buses, taxis, or the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak. The trail starts just west of The Peak complex.
