Concert & Conversation with Peter Buffett

Posted: 11 Sep 2009

Being the son of billionaire and philanthropist Warren Buffett is usually the first thing attributed to Peter Buffett. But far from riding the coattails of his father, the younger Buffett has forged a successful career of his own in music – a career that has seen him win an Emmy as well as write and produce numerous albums. It’s this musical expertise that brings him to Hong Kong this fortnight.

Buffett will be taking part in Asia Society’s Concert & Conversation lecture series, a forum that allows musicians to tell their story through speech and music.

“My talk will focus on how I found my path in life as a music composer and the things I learned growing up that helped shape my personal identity and values. Some of the story is told through music as well,” says Buffett in an email interview. “I like the format mostly because of the ‘conversation’ part. I really enjoy getting questions from the audience and engaging in the dialogue that people want to have.”

And of course, Buffett will also talk about what it’s like to be Warren Buffett’s son. “The short answer is that it’s the same as being the son of any father that is dependable and caring,” says Buffett. “Many people assume that my father has taken care of many of my needs in life, or that if I want to achieve something, he will take care of it somehow. But we both strongly believe that self respect comes from earning your own reward. I would not feel a sense of self worth if I didn’t reach my accomplishments on my own – through hard work and by making mistakes along the way.”
