Top 5 local YouTube sensations
5. MTR Man
Public displays of affection are often frowned upon in Chinese society, but it’s way beyond wrong when a man on the MTR gets intimate with a pole. As he’s riding on the Kwun Tong line, this, ahem, gentleman, begins hugging the pole, then wraps his legs around it, and finally starts rubbing his body against it. As the video moves in for a close-up – with eyes scarily fixed upon the camera – it’s clear that the man’s face is rubbing against it too. Talk about spreading the love.

It’s true what they say: leave it all on the pitch. In 2006, in a match between Hong Kong and Macau, the referee gives local football star Lee Kin-wo a yellow card, and then gestures dismissively at him. Angered, Lee kicks the football at the referee, who then engages the footballer in a flurry of kicks and punches. The fight was finally broken up by other players and officials. While Lee received a year’s ban from competitive action, the referee was banned for life. And he didn’t even start it.

Recorded at a restaurant sometime in early 2009, only a Hongkonger could throw such an unrelenting outburst for shark’s fin soup. After a waiter informs a female customer they’ve run out, she begins to scream hysterically. Out of frustration, she falls to the ground and throws a childlike tantrum. It’s a well known fact that many Hong Kong women have a ‘princess mentality’, though this particular lady seems to be more precious than most. Still, you’ve got to love the gweipo giggling on the left.

2. Bus Uncle
In April 2006, this argument between two men, on a double-decker bus headed towards Yuen Long, was splashed all over the internet, and even made it onto the nightly news. In this six-minute video, ‘Bus Uncle’ shouts and swears angrily at the young man sitting behind him, for complaining about the volume of his voice while on the phone. He forces the young man to apologise, shake hands, and aggressively explains to him that people should leave each other alone. His phrase “I have pressure, you have pressure” has since become part of the vernacular, as Hongkongers found stress relief in Bus Uncle’s outburst.

1. Airport Lady
At Chek Lap Kok in February this year, a local lady went berserk after she missed her flight to San Francisco. The woman’s three minutes of yelling and bawling became an instant YouTube hit days after it was uploaded by an anonymous member of staff. As her husband tries to calm her down, she doesn’t stop squealing, asking why the doors were closed even though the plane had yet to takeoff. She becomes so emotional that there are moments when she actually has to pause for breath.
