Pak Tam Chung to Long Ke
12km, 3 hrs, Easy
Possibly the most popular (and populated) hike in Hong Kong. Unfortunately you spend most of the time walking on paved road, but the hike ends at Long Ke beach. With clean water and sands, the beach is considered one of Hong Kong’s best.
The trail begins about 400 metres beyond the entrance to Sai Kung East Country Park beside the intersection. Follow the road along the basin over the two dams of the High Island Reservoir and up into the hills. On a sunny day the reservoir is an impressive backdrop as it shines emerald, and is bordered by a red rocky shoreline plunging down from green hills.
Construction of the reservoir was completed in 1979 and was built to combat the water shortages in Hong Kong during the 1960s. It stands as the first of such basins to be built by barricading the coastline with dams. Ten villages were submerged or below the water line when the reservoir was flooded.
At the end of the road, the trail finally lifts off from the road and heads up and over the hill to Long Ke.
Head back down the hill to the near empty beach.
The best part of this hike comes at the end of a long day spent on the beach – it’s only a short walk back over the hill to the road, and a few taxis usually will be waiting to transport you back to civilisation.
Getting there: Take bus 94 from Sai Kung Village to Pak Tam Chung. Alight the bus and follow the road passed the gates and on to the intersection where the trailhead is marked with sign posts.
