Get Out: Tai Tam Gap to Stanley Gap
7km, 2 hrs, Moderate
Beer. This short hike ends with beer. Unfortunately, about 1,000 steps up separate you from your reward.
Pick up Tsz Lo Shan trail on Tai Tam Gap Road by Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park. Walk to the bottom of the reservoir and follow the trail down the steps beside the apartment tower. The route wraps around behind Repulse Bay where the trail overlooks Deep Water Bay, apartment towers, Middle Island and the distant Lamma Island (when pollution allows).
One of The Twins (the shorter, more aggressive one) becomes visible further along the trail. Although only the first segment of the mountain, you’ll notice a thin dark line of the trail leading up the hillside. Straight up.
At the intersection with the Wilson Trail, hang a right down the hill and get ready to put your stairmaster thighs to the test. It’s about 1,000 steps to get to the top of this 363 metre peak. But the second Twin (the tall, dull one) is waiting for you just beyond the next dip, which sends you to a lofty 386 metres above Tai Tam Reservoir.
Once you reach the top, stop and enjoy the near 360 degree views of Hong Kong Island and out towards Po Toi. The descent into Stanley is equally impressive, with sharp ridges leading the way down. At the end of the trail, it’s just a short cab ride along Stanley Gap Road to beer.
Getting there: Take a taxi up along Wong Nai Chung Gap Road to Tai Tam Gap Road, and get out at the reservoir. Andrew James
