Get Out: MacLehose Trail, Stage 3

MacLehose Trail, Stage 3 (Pak Tam Au to Kei Ling Ha, 10.2km, Difficult)
Downloadable map(.pdf)

The route:
The walk starts with about 30 minutes hoofing straight up rock steps to Ngam Tau Shan. Save up – you'll need your energy for a few more peaks later on. There are great views at the top of the Northern Tolo Channel, Tai Po to the west and Ma On Shan to the south (unless you get stuck in cloudy weather). You may encounter some wild cows, they're pretty low-key but aren’t big on sharing. Their meadow-muffins could be your biggest obstacle. (A general rule of bovine is to stick to the inside of the trail.)

The open slopes on the hilltop hold the remains of Hakka farming terraces. About 30 minutes in (or two hours, if you go by the tourism board estimates), after walking through the woodlands, you’ll reach the Cheung Sheung campsite. Tent space is available, complete with BBQ pits, tables, and an outhouse.

Follow the MacLehose trail signs and a short distance past the campsite the trail gets a little bit unfriendly. If you cover the first half of the trail in what seems like record time, don’t get too excited – the last half of the trail is a slog. You'll drop down into a valley before bagging another three peaks: Wa Mei Shan, Lui Ta Shek, and Kai Kung Shan, all about 400 meters high.

Getting there:
Take either bus 94 or 96R from Sai Kung and get off at Pak Tam Au. The trail starts on the right hand side, about 20 metres down the road.
