Best hotel
Hotel LKF by Rhombus
Forget all those international brands that bring their services, customs and comforts from lands afar so Hong Kong can call itself an international city. We like it when a home grown chain does it right at home. Though it doesn’t have any of the usual perks like a pool, gym, spa, or even a business centre, it does have a yoga studio, and one of the city’s hottest supper clubs located on its top floor. The rooms are spacious, outfitted with Lavazza espresso machines and sunken bathtubs. Oh, and did we mention it is in the middle of party central Lan Kwai Fong? 33 Wyndham St, Lan Kwai Fong, Central, 3518 9333; www.hotel-lkf.com.hk.
Runner-up: W Hong Kong
Everything screams “time to let your hair down”, from the moment you step onto the electro-lit elevator floor to when you sip your first drink in the living room/DJ lounge. The rooms have a fun, modern business feel and come complete with rain shower and Bliss spa products. This could be because of its close proximity to the soon to be completed ICC next door. Any dotcom exec would feel very much at home here with all the in-room gadgetries including an ipod dock, remote controlled curtains and flat screens everywhere. The W is famous for their Whatever/Whenever button, which connects you to their in-house specialists who will get you pretty much whatever you want, whenever you want it. 1 Austin Rd West, Kowloon Station, West Kowloon, 3717 2222; www.starwoodhotels.com.
Second runner-up: Landmark Mandarin Oriental
The Mandarin Oriental is where you put your parents up when they come to town, but the Landmark Mandarin Oriental is where you put your best friends. This contemporary boutique hotel is marketed for Generation X-Y-Zers who want all the modern living amenities (Turkish Hamam baths, pilates studios, Michelin-starred restaurant Amber) plus five-star service. The rooms here are intentionally spacious with a stunning oval bathroom semi-open to the suites. The service is tailored towards a younger market who prefer Kee Club to Yung Kee, while their spa is one of the finest places to get some R&R in this manic city. And dogs are allowed upon request. 15 Queen's Road Central, The Landmark, Central, 2132 0188; www.mandarinoriental.com/landmark.
Honorable mentions:
The Peninsula
The grand dame epitomises what it means to stay in Hong Kong. Not only is The Pen (as it is lovingly abbreviated) one of the most celebrated hotels in Hong Kong, it is Hong Kong full stop. A must-visit site for travellers, you’ll usually find them enjoying a cuppa tea in their lobby come tea time or at their newly opened Salon De Ning (See Best Bars). And this year it celebrated its 80th birthday. Many Happy Returns. Salisbury Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, 2920 2888; www.peninsula.com.
Readers choice: Four Seasons
To be at the crossroad of Hong Kong’s financial and shopping core and be the hub of all transportation lines (planes, trains and automobiles) will make you stand out from the rest. But the Four Seasons is much more than convenience. It also offers Mobile-rated Five Star service, five Michelin stars shared among its two showpiece restaurants, and SpaFinder 2008 Readers’ Choice Awards spa. This is home away from home for many business, entertainment and political dignitaries. It’s not hard to see why. 8 Finance St, Central, 3196 8888; www.fourseasons.com/hongkong.
