Sam Hui
He’s widely regarded as Hong Kong’s ‘God of song’ for popularising the genre that has come to utterly dominate our musical landscape: Cantopop. In the late 1970s, by bringing then relatively unknown Western elements into his pop songs, Sam Hui created a new style of music the city could honestly call its own. His simple, light-hearted songs appealed to the working classes and are adored by even the most indie of today’s Hong Kong musicians.
Despite repeated attempts at retirement, Hui, at 60 years old, continues to perform and record. His latest album, Life Is Good, was released in 2007. He initially came out of retirement in 2004 and performed a series of sell-out shows to pay respects to the passing of his close friends, the pop-stars Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui.
“I am not a ‘Cantopop god’,” he told 21cn.com in 2005, “I just feel there is too melancholy… like many stars have passed away one after another, so I have to come back… in the hope of bringing happiness to the audience.”
