Jill Robinson is the face, and force, behind the Animals Asia Foundation(www.animalsasia.org), Hong Kong’s leading animal welfare charity, and China’s foremost protector of the Asiatic Black Bear. Harvested for their bile (a popular ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine), the bears are often caged for their entire life, a grim situation that led Robinson to establish the AAF in 1998. “My relationship with these bears is a love affair. I can’t understand how such an intelligent animal can turn around and forgive the same species that has caused them so much torture,” she said recently.
Through her tireless work, she has rescued hundreds of bears and placed them in her Sichuan sanctuary, working in partnership with local and national governments to halt the practice altogether. As well as the bear campaign, Robinson and her team have also established numerous programmes, including Doctor Dog, which aims to change attitudes towards eating dogs and cats in southern China.
Asked to pick her own hero, Robinson chose a well-known figure, one who has selflessly helped promote the AAF cause: actress and singer Karen Mok. Recounting the time when Mok performed at an Animals Asia benefit concert, Robinson recalls the moment when Mok “walked out on stage wearing a dress made of human hair… turned around on stage, and said ‘this is the only fur we should be wearing on our bodies’, in front of thousands and thousands of people.” While Mok’s comments certainly made an impact, Robinson herself is changing attitudes across the continent.
We asked what her ideal vision of the future would be: “Simply to relegate practices so medieval, so ghastly and unconscionably cruel, to the history books,” she says. “To accelerate the power of the animal welfare groups of China to lead, rather than follow, and finally, through their own tenacity and passion, to end bear farming and the slaughter of dogs and cats for their meat and fur.” Often faced with entrenched attitudes towards animal welfare, how does she stay motivated? “In days when mountains seem so hard to climb, the words Dad always used to say help me, as I hear him saying, ‘hit it hard,’ and also the words of Tolstoy: ‘Every man and every living creature has a sacred right to the gladness of springtime.’” Simon Ostheimer
