Stanley Wong Ping-pui
47 years old, fine artist, photographer, graphic designer
Stanley Wong Ping-pui is a lesson in multi-tasking; from multi-award-winning graphic designer and advertising guru, to his second identity as leading fine artist and photographer Anothermountainman. Yet, despite his ceaseless creativity, humility abounds when asked how he feels to be named a Time Out hero.
“I don’t know!” he cries down the phone from his busy graphic design production house. “It’s hard to answer; to me everyone in Hong Kong should be a hero. If people don’t clean the streets in one week, you would really notice their absence! Can you imagine? To me different people have different roles and everyone is a hero, provided the person participates in being part of Hong Kong. I am glad to be one of the people participating; I found out that I’m contributing.”
It’s clear from Wong’s art that Hong Kong has been a central muse to him throughout his life. His red, white and blue series quite literally took the fabric of our city life – the ubiquitous tricolour woven bags – and transformed it into fine art photography and installations. “[Hong Kong] is really important to me,” he agrees. “I think I enjoy being part of Chinese Hong Kong, the last stage was British colonial Hong Kong… My feeling is I have learned a lot and gained a lot. This big cosmopolitan city has allowed me to do different things, allowed me to achieve what I want to achieve. Freedom is here. As a Hong Kong Chinese if you really want to do something, it’s not hard to achieve it. For the creative person the door is ready for you, if you want to open it.”
In terms of the current art scene, Wong suggests that time is of the essence. “I hope that West Kowloon will happen soon,” he says. “Or else we will be too far behind China or Singapore or Taipei. We need to move fast.” And, one assumes, we need to multi-task. Clare Morin
