“Hong Kong is never cold enough for autumn fashion,” says Jing, of Daydream Nation, half of the brother and sister duo behind one of the least wearable but most talked about collections to come out of Hong Kong since Barney Cheng dressed us in looming ball gowns meant for super socialites. And so global warming drives the autumn/winter collections of 2008. “This winter we are wearing summer,” says Jing.
The inaccessibility of Daydream Nation’s collection stems partially from Jing’s Central Saint Martins theatre design training. “We did a four-legged pair of pants this season,” he boasts. This year, their autumn collection, entitled ‘Goodnight Deer’, shows off what they do best – fairytales in the form of clothes. Storyboarding and puppetry come into play with hooded cloaks, knitted metal jewellery, and arrow chains that look like they are about to attack your neck. There are even pieces armed with deer antlers.
So who wears this stuff? Celebrities looking for a bit of paparazzi action – the clothes are so stage costume that they only fit those who think that fashion just can’t be loud enough.
Daydream Nation will available from Harvey Nichols later this autumn.
