A toast to the little arts
School’s nearly out! This Christmas, keep the little ones occupied with fun and engaging concerts, performances and puppet shows as part of the Cheers! series. Andrea Yu picks out the best performances that will keep tots of all ages entertained...
Heroic Boys
Cirque du Soleil, eat your heart out! The Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe of China takes circus gymnastics back to basics. They have some pretty impressive stunts lined up for you, such as juggling people with their feet, various body contortions and the old ‘unicycling on a high wire while doing a handstand’ trick. The troupe has a long history dating back to 1959, but nowadays they incorporate plenty of modern dance techniques into their Chinese acrobatic tradition. Dec 24-27.
The Adventure of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer
While this might be the first apocalyptic story your child will ever see, fret not! It’s quite a heartwarming tale that we think will touch parents too. After the world has drowned, Alvin retreats to the deep sea in order to find new places for humans to live, and also to be reunited with the soul of his wife who just passed away. This solo show combines live animation with music and puppetry in what’s been referred to as a ‘musical Wall-E’. Dec 16-18.
The Snowman & The Bear
Back again this holiday season is the City Chamber Orchestra’s cuddly Christmastime story adapted from the two popular storybooks. In The Snowman, a young boy’s snow creation magically comes to life on Christmas Eve, while in The Bear, a little girl befriends a polar bear and they go on a Christmas adventure. These stories in the snow are told using animation, with live music composed by Howard Blake. They are narrated in English. Dec 10-11.
Onionoise
We’re all for not playing with your food… but herein lies one exception. The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra uses carrots, cucumbers, peppers and more, and whittles them out to become creative instruments. But worry not as the leftovers are boiled into a delicious veggie soup. Surprisingly, the orchestra’s sound is minimalist electronic, akin to early Kraftwerk. Maybe they’ll play the Pipes of Peas for Christmas?
Dec 30-Jan 1.
