From River Town to the Road

Peter Hessler first arrived in China as a volunteer teacher with the Peace Corps, which sent him to Fuling, a small city on the Yangtze. Eventually he spent more than a decade in the country, detailing his experiences in three books: River Town, Oracle Bones, and, most recently, Country Driving. He began research for the third book with a 7,000-mile road trip across northern China. Having acquired a Chinese driver’s license, and renting a Jeep, Hessler followed small roads along the path of the Great Wall. Along the way he picked up hitchhikers — farmers on their way to market, truckers whose rigs had broken down, and dozens of young people who were in the process of migrating to the cities for work. Hessler describes how this journey gave him a new perspective on rural China, and the way it is being changed by the nation’s rapid development. Drinks reception and book signing from 6:30pm; the talk will begin at 7:30pm. To Please note there are no advance tickets for this event. For details please email: admin@rgshk.org.hk.
