Our obsession with the adorable, lazy egg yolk Gudetama is about to take on a new dimension: As initially reported by Secret Los Angeles, a permanent Gudetama Cafe is opening in Orange County this weekend.

Starting on May 4, you’ll find the cafe at 8340 La Palma Avenue, inside the Buena Park Downtown shopping mall just east of Knott’s Berry Farm. The very first destination of its kind in Southern California, the Sanrio-inspired cafe will celebrate its official debut on Saturday by gifting the first 100 guests in line a VIP bag. Everyone will also be able to buy one drink and get one free all day long.

According to the menu posted online, the bright-yellow cafe will be serving a whole lot of egg-based dishes (obviously).

Standouts include the lazy bacon, egg and cheese served on a brioche bun with American cheese and spicy chili sauce and the “whatever” avocado toast, made on sourdough bread with diced avocado, avocado basil, oregano, parsley and two quail eggs.

All sandwiches are served with tater tots and can be washed down with traditional coffee drinks or more creative concoctions, like the passion fruit yogurt smoothie, mango milk, the crème brûlée cold brew or the popular Japanese carbonated soft drink Ramune.

Although this is the first Gudetama brick-and-mortar cafe on this side of the world, a similar concept debuted in Tokyo back in 2019, followed by others in Singapore and Osaka. All locations have since closed, though, a fact that imbues the Los Angeles-adjacent address with even more glamour.

No other details about the destination have yet been disclosed—we’ll be scoping it out this weekend ourselves—but given the popularity of the character, the excitement surrounding previous area pop-ups and fans’ penchant to own anything with Gudetama’s image printed on it, we imagine the new cafe will also be selling a bunch of branded merchandise, as well.

Though the Buena Park cafe is the first permanent Gudetama eatery in the area, Angelenos have been graced with a few lazy egg-inspired pop-ups over the past decade, including at Plan Check, Highland Park Bowl and Curry House.
